East West Rail is a major project to establish a strategic railway connecting East Anglia with Central, Southern and Western England.
The ‘Western Section‘ is now a committed, funded scheme to re-introduce passenger and freight services between Bedford and Oxford, Milton Keynes and Aylesbury. It involves upgrading and reconstructing sections of existing and ‘mothballed’ rail track, which is to be delivered by Network Rail.
The project is being promoted by the East West Rail Consortium – a group of local authorities and businesses with an interest in improving access to and from East Anglia and the Milton Keynes South Midlands growth area.
The Consortium is also working with Network Rail to develop a business case to extend the railway to Cambridge to enable train services to continue to Norfolk and Suffolk, referred to as ‘The Central Section‘.
